A Curious Victorian Painted Wooden Miniature Coffin (1800 - 1900)

Inscribed, "In Memory of Little Joe. Died November 3rd 1875. Aged 3 Years."

Interesting! Much better then the shoebox method we use now.

Aaawww... I had my rat buried at a pet cemetary in a coffin... ofcourse when I requested it I was 12 years old. My mother didn't know anything about it ;) Since then I just bury them in the garden under a tree or let them stay at the vet, if they had to be put to sleep.

Poor little Joe! I wonder if he was a coalmine canary? He may have saved some coal miner's lives, maybe that's why he received such a fancy memorial.

Lord, I'm tired. I first assumed that the bird represented a dead child and that this was the memento for the grieving family. NOT the logical assumption, whoich apparently is that "Joe" is the dead bird.
